NEXT WEEK’S BIBLE READINGS     August 22 - 28,   Ecclesiastes 10-12

IN A NUTSHELL: God designed the human relationship between a husband and a wife as a way to demonstrate his desire for our relationship with Him. From Genesis to Revelation the picture of husband and wife reveals, uniqueness, completeness, cooperation, fellowship and most of all love. In Solomon's book The Song of Songs (meaning there is no song more grand than the one sung by a bride and groom in love) We see that God designed us and the marriage union as an ultimate picture of love, joy and hope. Satan's intention is to do just the opposite, steal away the faith, hope and love. This weekend's sermon is designed to challenge us  to hold fast to God's design for faith, hope and love in our relationships!

TEXT: Song of Songs  (S of S 2:3-72:13-17)  Gen. 2:21-23;  Eph. 5:31-32; Rev. 21:2; 9-10; Is. 62:5Ezekiel 16:8Jeremiah 2:2

HIS WORD

  1. How does Solomon describe his Shulamite bride to be?  2:2;  2:10-15
  2. How does the Shulamite maiden describe Solomon? 2:3-7; 16-17
  3. How might Jesus' love for us be compared to the love of a husband for his bride? Eph. 5:31-32
  4. How might the second coming of Christ, the end of the Christian's physical seperation from Christ be likened unto the day a Bride and Groom celebrate their marriage?  Rev. 21:2; 9-10;
  5. How does the Old Testament liken the relationship between God and man to a groom and a bride? Is. 62:5Ezekiel 16:8Jeremiah 2:2

YOUR WORLD

  1. Do you know an older couple that might be a good example of never getting old or bored with each other?  How about asking them about their secret!
  2. How has the loss of innocence in intimacy in the world and even especially the church affected our culture?  Where all does the twisted nature of sexuallity show up in our culture?

SMALL PIECES

  1. How might the message of the excitement and purity of the intimate relationship between a man and a woman as found in Song of Songs be used to help pass on to our youth God's intention for the family?   Check out Focus on the Families resources.
  2. How many different ways is the God designed plan for sexuality twisted in our culture?

BIG PICTURE

  1. Do you have confidence that His (God's) banner over you is love?  Have you answered his invitation to the banquet eating table?  Do you know that His is your's and you are His?

7/17 "What's Next? Synergy Milestone #5 Legacy"

THIS WEEK’S BIBLE READINGS    July 4 - 10,  Titus 1:11-2:6; & Prov. 7-13

  •  WHERE’S YOUR SPACE TO READ?
  • WHAT’S YOUR TIME TO STUDY?
  • WHAT ARE THE KEY WORDS?
  • WHAT WAS GOD SAYING TO THEM?  WHAT’S GOD SAYING TO YOU?
  • WHAT’S THE HOLY SPIRIT GOING TO SHOW YOU THROUGHOUT THE DAY?
  • FOR WHAT ARE YOU GRATEFUL?
  • FOR WHAT ARE YOU CONCERNED?
  • WHO NEEDS YOU TODAY?

NEXT WEEK’S BIBLE READINGS     July 18 -24,   Titus 2:7-15; & Prov. 14-20

IN A NUTSHELL: Two main ingredients for leaving a legacy is learning to assess a situation from God's perspective and thereby turning inspirational life lessons into a type of "jet fuel" with which those following you can learn to fly!

Texts: Titus 2 - 3;  Proverbs 7-13;  Eccl. 3:1-11; Gal. 6:1-9; Titus 2:2-4; Eccl. 12; Mk. 8:36; Josh. 4:1-7

HIS WORD

The Goal of Legacy...so that in everything they/we may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior. (Titus 2:10)

2 Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self- controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine.  They are to teach what is good, 4 and so train... the young women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.  Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. 7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, 8 and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.  (Titus 2:2-6)

YOUR WORLD

  1.  Start at the end and look forward... what do you want said and thought at your memorial service? What are you doing today to make that happen?

  2. What are some key things that have happened in your life that you didn't expect but may have "set you back" in life?  What have you learned from those experiences?

  3.  What are some significant lessons that you have learned that have surprised you?  Who does God want you to share those lessons with?

SMALL PIECES

  • The different seasons have their challenges and opportunities. Learn them and make the most of them!

  • God will provide fruit for those who trust & obey.

  • Re-establishing priorities and teaching others revive a sense of purpose.

  • Maturity is the art of giving up that which we want most to receive that which we need most.

BIG PICTURE

God has provided opportunities to grow and many times it's amid changes that are challenging and even at times very painful. In the "Legacy" milestone we seek to coordinate relationships and  provide resources  that will support spiritual growth through the later years of life, This enables you to leave a solid foundation for those following you.

  • FOR WHAT ARE YOU CONCERNED?
  • WHO NEEDS YOU TODAY?

NEXT WEEK’S BIBLE READINGS     July 11 -17,   Titus 2:7-15; & Prov. 14-20

IN A NUTSHELL:

In a Nutshell: Sabbath, stewardship, balance, priorities, networks and action provide our greatest tools as productive adults.  Understanding accountability, practicing discernment and embracing spiritual authority will assure success.

Texts: Titus 1:10-11; Proverbs 3:5-8;  1 Thess. 5:21; 2 Cor. 13:1; Mt. 26:31-45;  Jn. 21:14-17; Mt. 25:14-30; Mk. 1:35-38;  Jas. 2:14-17; 1 Cor. 6:12; Eccl. 4:12; Heb. 5:11-14;   Lk. 6:46-48; 1 Jn. 4:1;

  HIS WORD

Titus 1:10-11

  1. What are two extremes of types of people?
  2. How do their attitudes actions ("teachings") affect households, the church and young people's lives?
  3. What often times shows up as the core value of everything they do?

Proverbs 3:5-8

  1.  There are somethings about God we should "look to", focus on, expect from. What are they?
  2. There are somethings about ourselves that we should not "lean on", trust, focus on or expect. What are they?

YOUR WORLD

  1. As a young adult what are some ways you feel the church could better support you?
  2. As an older adult how do you see younger adults can support the church?
  3. What are some key experiences, truths, relationships that have helped you transition from being a young person to being an adult?  How can you share these with others without being critical or judgmental in attitude?

SMALL PIECES

Many people expect the church to continue the "youth group" experience for young adults.  We see this as enabling the "failure to launch" phenomenon.  Missions trips, TLCC's Single's ministry, CARE Group leader training all provide opportunities for young leadership to emerge.

Some perspectives from Facebook...

DOUG - If you are 19 - 35 years old I would be interested in your feedback on this question "What do you think today's churches need to understand/do in order for them to be effective at helping you become what God wants you to become?"

  • i would say being open to sharing mistakes of life. it is easier to ask how to get through something in life when you know your not the only one facing it
  • I second this. Sharing the ugly details of failure in a small group or in a one on one setting can be helpful,  Just telling us “well we didn't get here overnight' or some oversimplified cliché doesn’t help.
  • Offer opportunities to be in a mentorship relationship with someone older and wiser person. Most younger people don't want to ask for advice.
  • Mentorship is a great idea. It's hard to be at this age and feel too old to ask for help with life but too young to understand it. More 1 on 1 contact with a trusted person who's been through it would make it easier to ask tough questions and be honest about where we've been and where we want to go; and then a push to get there.
  • I think it goes beyond mentorship. This age group is trying to find their place in the world and who they are as a member of the church.  Having clear opportunities to serve would be my way of thinking. We are doers and want to feel like we are contributing. Mentoring will come about when people of mixed ages serve together.
  • And for those of us that may say that we do not have time because of work or family, or whatever else, we need to be pushed harder to set priorities, otherwise the chord that once tied generations together will grow weak and eventually break. Encourage, strengthen, and instruct us, and you will see great things and help us grow into who we need to be
  • Show consistent respect and honor to the body of Christ…  Encourage us to pray for God to show us what our talents, skills, and gifts are and encourage us to use those gifts wherever we are. Remind us that God works in a process and we can't skip ahead to "the good stuff". Also, frequently praise God that he is in control and is with us no matter what.
  • ...I especially like the “being real” sharing struggles idea, I'm trying to figure this Christianity thing out without having parents to look to as examples. I honestly feel like an outcast at church because I nor any of my family work for the church or central. I mean everyone I talk to at church(and I like them all)  falls into that category...I have a hard time relating to people cuz I don't feel "churchy" enough...I work with, talk and hang out with druggies,,alcoholics and non Christians all the time. I have no clue how to talk to them about Jesus correctly. There has to be more people at church that could relate to me.  I.just don't know any.  Mostly my fault I guess cuz I'm not really good at meeting new people. I like our church a lot but it sometimes feels like we are stuck in a bubble/box...and while I think we're better at accepting new people, the bubble seems to full to let anyone in. Maybe because a lot of people seem guarded and afraid to have their weaknesses exposed at church. We are all sinners but no one seems to be talking about how they treat their sins, which in turn makes me feel like an outcast cuz I know I'm messed up
  • I also think our age group needs to be open to listen cause there are people in older generation willing to reach out to us...this isn't a one way street. I've seen it first hand at our church with them making an effort to help us
  • I think there needs to be more "age appropriate" Sunday school classes. Or if we have some, to make them more public. I know from my stand point and a lot of the people in youth group around my age, once we graduated unless you went to Central, I felt like there wasn't anything for me to be in/apart of. We go from being in Sunday school classes from the time we were born all the way up until we start college and then there's nothing. So maybe more classes that would accompany that?
  • I noticed in this list that some people that grew up in our church felt out of place.  Some especially that hadn’t gone to Bible College maybe assume if they don’t learn how to lead others to Christ the Bible College way that they might mess it up.  Isn’t there some way to communicate God’s love and help people discover their gifts to serve others outside of a class or by quoting someone's five point outline to accept Christ?  Can’t there be a little more “Learn to tell your story in Christ rather than people flaunting their credentials and boasting of their spiritual achievements. That makes it seem like unless you have higher education training or get everything doctrinally accurate then you can't share your story and what Christ is doing in your life.  And that's completely untrue.

BIG PICTURE

God has provided relationships and opportunities to take on new responsibility:  TLCC Synergy seeks to support this Milestone with resources to encourage networking, accountability, refinement and balance in the life and spiritual growth of the young adult.

7/3/16 "Patriotism vs. Nationalism

THIS WEEK’S BIBLE READINGS    June 27-July 3, Titus 1:1-10 & Pr. 1-6

  •  WHERE’S YOUR SPACE TO READ?
  • WHAT’S YOUR TIME TO STUDY?

  • WHAT’S THE HOLY SPIRIT GOING TO SHOW YOU THROUGHOUT THE DAY?

  • FOR WHAT ARE YOU CONCERNED?
  • WHO NEEDS YOU TODAY?

NEXT WEEK’S BIBLE READINGS     July 4-10,   Titus 1:11-2:6; & Prov. 7-13

IN A NUTSHELL: There is a fine line between patriotism and nationalism, but it is a very important line. Patriotism is "an allegiance with attitudes and behaviors supporting a particular nation's decisions and actions."  Nationalism on the other hand is an allegiance of ideology toward that nation."  It might be summed up that patriotism is a thoughtful, conditional allegiance, whereas nationalism can become a blind loyalty in spite of changing values.

Texts: Phil. 3:17-21; John 8:31-38;  1 Peter 5:1-11; Heb. 13:14

HIS WORD

  1. John 8:31-38 What was the key factor mentioned by the Jews that made them feel they were free even without Jesus' teachings?
  2. What did Jesus say would "set them free" and how was this to happen?
  3. How did Jesus distinguish between truth and lies, good and evil, freedom and slavery? What were the sources for each?
  4. Phil. 3:17-21 Paul equally draws contrasts between two groups of people.  Who are they, how are they recognized and what will be their destinies?
  5. Ultimately, where is our citizenship?  What types of freedom do Christians long to embrace?
  6. 1 Peter 5:1-11 Boil it down, what does Peter say we should do in order to stay the course as Christians in an unChristian world?

YOUR WORLD

  • Patriotism:  involves attitudes and behaviors that support a nation’s decisions and actions. Nationalism: A belief or ideology of allegiance with a particular nation.
  • Principle #2 A free people cannot survive under a republican constitution unless they remain virtuous and morally strong.

  • Principle #4 Without religion the government of a free people cannot be maintained.

  • Principle #26 The core unit which determines the strength of any society is the family; therefore the government should foster and protect its integrity.

SMALL PIECES

BIG PICTURE

In a Nutshell:  We only have a few years to prepare our youth to learn how to love good and hate evil. By the time they are teens many habits, attitudes and dispositions are pretty well fixed.  In order to prevent a sense of entitlement it is imperative that we learn early the reality of consequences, the ability to rebound and how to interpret "bids for connection."  Is your home the tower of Babel or the Jewish temple court at Pentecost. Are you communicating in a language that is recognizable? Do you understand each other's "bid for connection"?  "No one longs for redemption more than God's longing for us!"

NEXT WEEK’S BIBLE READINGS   June 20-26,  Joshua 17-24

In a Nutshell:  Competency is required for many actions and responsibilities in life -- driving a car, flying an airplane, teaching at a school.  Yet, somehow many parents get thrust into this enormous responsibility of raising kids with no training and no confidence.  There are scores of good books, seminars, methodologies and programs focused on parenting children in their early years.  But let's go back to the basics.  2 Timothy tells us that the Word of God equips us for every good work, and that certainly applies to parenting young children -- a very good work, and a big responsibility.

Texts: Ephesians 6:1-4;   others:  Joshua 13-16; Psalm 127:3; 2 Tim. 3:16; Prov. 23:12-14; Heb 12:5-11

Foundational Truth:  Children are a   blessing  , NOT a   burden.

Key Principles:

1. Children need to be   nurtured  , not   neglected.

2. Children need to be   disciplined  , not   harmed   or   abused  .

3. Children need to be raised according to the   character   and   attributes   of God, not the   expectations   of man.

NEXT WEEK’S BIBLE READINGS   June 13-19, Joshua 13-16

SUNDAY’S PLAY LIST VIA YOUTUBE

IN A NUTSHELL: Jesus told us (and showed us) what to do in order to pass our faith on to those following us. But Joshua provides play by play illustrations of what can happen when we do disciple those following us as well as when we don't!  Discipleship is a life process that is not optional.  It's never too late to start! Discipleship is What's Next!

TEXTS:  Matt. 28:16-20; Matt. 16:24; Joshua 7-132 Samuel 21

HIS WORD

1.  How did Jesus describe/define discipleship?  Matt. 28:16-20; Matt. 16:24

  • "Discipleship is…. following Jesus,  “being baptized”, obeying/teaching others,  all that Jesus commanded."

2.  How many soldiers fought Ai the first time (Jos. 7:1-4) ... the second time (Jos. 8:3)?

3.  How did the Gibeonites deceive Israel and what ultimately happened? (Joshua 9-10; 2 Samuel 21)

  • Satan’s deception is always close
  • God’s provisions are always closer!

YOUR WORLD

4.  How is "discipling" your family different from being in a small discipleship group?

5.  How important does your family regard consequences and the conscience in your family's spiritual growth?

6.  How have you included the process of discipleship in your "Family Mission Statement"?

7.  How do you score on being able to lead your family through these core elements of a biblical worldview?

1 - 3 - 5   The Gospel,  I can describe sin, atonement, what the Bible says about being saved, and being lost.

1 - 3 - 5   The Big Story, I can explain how Adam, Noah, Abraham, Israel, the judges, kings , and prophet , the disciples and Apostles are related to Jesus and the plan of redemption

1 - 3 - 5   The Big Truths, I understand and can teach core passages of Scripture about God, His Character, the trinity, Creation, God’s Providence, Human nature and sin, the person work and ministry of Jesus, the person and work of the Holy Spirit, Salvation, the church, and last things.

1 - 3 - 5   The Great Commission , I comprehend, relate to and can explain how God views the lost, leads those seeking to win them to Jesus and empowers the word of God to draw them.

1 - 3 - 5   The Spiritual Disciplines , I have learned how to, and practice Bible study, praying, worship, ministry and stewardship.

1 - 3 - 5   Christian Living , Ican describe Scripture and key truths regarding forgiveness, marriage & family, sexual purity, parenting, discernment and biblical principles of decision making.  I can describe the implications of Theism, Modalism, Universalism, and Calvinism have on these teachings.

1 - 3 - 5   Worldview , I am able to point to and explain Scriptures that help Christians understand and explain to others the implications of the Bible regarding atheism, naturalism, evolution, and ethical issues such as the sacredness of human life,  sanctity of marriage, the rule of law, and principles of economics.

7.  How would you regard your "diagnosis" as being Spiritually Healthy?

  1.      Do you thirst for God?
  2.      Are you governed increasingly by God’s Word?
  3.      Are you more loving?
  4.      Are you more sensitive to God’s presence?
  5.      Do you have a growing concern for the spiritual and temporal needs of others?
  6.      Do you delight in the bride of Christ?
  7.      Are the spiritual disciplines increasingly important to you?
  8.      Do you still grieve over sin?
  9.      Are you a quicker forgiver?
  10.     Do you yearn for heaven and to be with Jesus?

SMALL PIECES

Battles lost... battles won!  Smooth talkers and careless walkers, story after story we are reminded that a Christian life is won through God's grace,Jesus' sacrifice & the life long process of discipleship.

Discipleship in your family: Your children can not commit to that which you and they have not thought through, seen modeled and practiced.  Basics first, then practice them, teach more and discern your weaknesses & strengths. Embrace the conscience, teach through consequences and always offer, model and receive grace.   1) Comprehension, 2) commitment, 3) transformation, and then progressive 4) growth. (Rom. 10:17; Heb. 5:11-6:3; 9:14; 2 Pet. 1:5-11; 1 Cor. 8:12; 1 Tim. 4:2)

NEXT WEEK’S BIBLE READINGS   June 6-12,   Joshua 8-12

IN A NUTSHELL: Once you accept the facts about where you are now then the next step is to decide, decide, DECIDE... "What's Next?" Many people, not keen on suffering consequences, just give up trying to change things and crawl around in the "muck" of bad consequences of from their bad decisions.  That's a terrible choice... Let's look to God and ask Him "What's Next?"  Based upon where you are now AND where the Bible suggest He wants to take you, What's Next?

  2. What are some specific issues that called for some serious courage on the part of the Israelites?
  3. What commands, resources and/or provisions did God provide the Israelites?

IN A NUTSHELL: Honoring our forefathers is important.  It’s also can be tricky.  Sometimes we are called to respect those that have lead us but made serious mistakes. It becomes important to both respect the authorities instituted by God while choosing to no longer embrace the teachings or traditions they embraced. It is important for us to keep our eye on the next generation, acknowledge past mistakes, celebrate successes, Love God, Learn the Truth and take God’s Light to the World.

How do I Love God, Learn the Truth and Light the World in light of these Scriptures?

TEXTS:  Acts 21 – 27; Romans 9:1-5; 2 Timothy 1:1-5; Acts 11:19-24; 15:1-7; 21:17-30; 24:16; 26:24-29

NEXT WEEK’S BIBLE READINGS   May 16-22,    Acts 24-25

Text:  Acts 10; 2 Cor. 4:7; Matt. 28:20

IN A NUTSHELL  (We need to intentionally reach out in friendship with the love of Jesus to all people of our community, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, political party, or personality type.)

ICE BREAKER   (When was the last time you had dinner with a family who has a different skin color or different nationality or different ethnicity. Share your experience. What did you learn? What did you have in common? What was hard to understand about them? Was there a language barrier?)

HIS WORD

  1. Read Ac. 10. Was it Peter that was seeking to reach out to Gentiles or was it God that was wanting to include Gentiles?
  2. What was the main obstacle that God had to remove in Peter's life before he could effectively be used by God? Read Ac. 10:15, 28.
  3. What was happening in Cornelius' life when this all took place? Ac. 10:2
  4. What was the initial reaction of the Jews when they heard the news? Ac. 11:1-3
  5. What were the signs that God was the one who wanted the Gentiles to be saved? Ac. 10:30-48
  6. 2 Cor. 4:7 says that we have the treasure of the good news of salvation and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in jars of clay. How do you think this emphasizes that God doesn't care about the outward appearance or various skin colors of a person? What does God really care about? 2 Cor.4:15
  7. So, just for the record, read Matt. 28:18-20. An old translation reads, "And lo, I will be with you always." Well, the "Lo" is for those who "Go!" Jesus commands us to make disciples and he goes with us when we do. That means learning and growing and obeying Jesus. And then helping others to learn and grow and obey Jesus! If we love Jesus, we will obey his commands. John 14:15, 24

YOUR WORLD

  1. Who might God be trying to reach in our community that is "outside" your normal circle of friends?
  2. Are there neighbors around you who are not Christians, who are a different race, gender, sexual orientation, or ethnicity? If so, what have you done to reach out to them in friendship with the love of Jesus?
  3. Since we know Christ died for ALL mankind, what are some groups in our community that would be difficult for you to reach out to? (Rich/Poor, African-American/Mexican/Asian, Democrats/Republicans, etc.)
  4. What can you intentionally do that could cross those cultural lines for the gospel? Through what opportunities would you develop a friendship with those you want to reach for Christ?
  5. What neighbor or group, is God preparing for YOU to come share your story of God's grace? List 3 possibilities. Now you just have to obey and look for opportunities to share.
  6. If we were all reaching out to our community for Christ, what would our Sunday morning worship look like, sound like, feel like? (More ethnic music, cultural expressions, more color, more excitement of what God is doing in our lives!?)

SMALL PIECES

  1. How do your social media posts show the love of Jesus to those you disagree with? (Muslims, Trump/Hillary, BlackLivesMatter, Homosexual/Transgender, Gun Control, Immigration, etc.)
  2. Love, Joy & Peace are fruits of the Holy Spirit in a believer's life. Discuss how that looks in a world that is so angry, confused,  twisted and perverted. How do you love people who are lost? What does that look like?
  3. When we get sidetracked with our RIGHTS about any issue, we will find ourselves treating people like enemies. But Satan is the enemy. Christians are called to love, submit, pray and trust the Lord rather than fight with weapons of this world. Hate, violence and division are what hampers so many from coming to Jesus and causes many believers to fall away. 2 Cor. 10:3-5

BIG PICTURE

  1. The Global church is growing and spreading the love of Jesus! The American churches that are growing, are blended groups of people who are crossing borders of race, socio-economic status, ethnicity and politics in order to reach the lost for Jesus. Are we growing and reaching our community for Christ?

NEXT WEEK’S BIBLE READINGS   May 16-22,    Acts 24-25

IN A NUTSHELL:  Idolatry at first seems archaic and irrelevant for today.  But if you take your eyes off the statue and look at our heart it's clear, idols are as plentiful as they ever were.   Anything that man creates or recognizes other than God himself to which he says, "now deliver me," has become his idol.  A false god seems harmless at first, endearing actually, but pretty soon it's enslaving. The question of this sermon is "What brings you to the table of life's decisions?  What makes you do what you do, go where you go, say what you say?"  It is the gospel that exposes and frees us to serve the Living God!  Paul was committed to "Go" and prayerfully expose the false Gods.

NEXT WEEK’S BIBLE READINGS   May 9-15,   Acts 21-23

IN A NUTSHELL:  Through the years God’s people have struggled with the challenge/fear of leaving traditional views to embrace what some say are heresy, others though suggest they are God’s view.  Should the church call the world to “come” to its “traditional views” or should the church “go” to see the Scripture “in light of the world we live in”?  The truth is found in Scripture as reasonable and common sense would have us interpret it.  Mother’s Day has been both a triumph and a scourge for the church. The Bible teaches neither bigotry nor feminism.  God has frequently opened doors for women that might seem surprising to us.  Neither male bigotry nor feminism are from God.  The former is an abuse of authority, the latter is defiance.

How do I Love God, Learn the Truth and Light the World in light of these Scriptures?

TEXTS: Acts 16:11-15; 18:1-3, 18-19, 24-28; 1 Cor. 14:33-36; 1 Tim. 2:8-14  (O.T. Hannah 1 Sam. 2; Deborah - Jg. 4:4-6; Ruth – Ru. 4:13-17 ; Esther – Es. 9:29; The king's mother - Pr. 31;  N.T. 1. How can I love God with all my heart, mind and strength and men and women as I love myself in light of these Scriptures?

  2. What new truths do these passages teach me?  How will I practice them?

  3. How will I seek to bring light to the world because of what I have come to believe about God and the role as well as postion of women in God's view?

Should the church say "Come!"  or should the church "Go?"  How do we know who & how to win the world?

Acts 15:39 - 18:22  And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. 7 And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. 8 So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”

Matthew 28" 18-20 “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Isaiah 66:18  "For I know their works and their thoughts; the time is coming to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and see My glory."

Texts:  (4+ Scriptures) Acts 6:1-5 (1 Corinthians 16:1-4);   Mark 12:41-44 (Phil. 4:17);  2 Corinthians 9:6-15;  Jeremiah 2:13 (Revelation 3:17-18)

IN A NUTSHELL:  Giving to the church tends to be rooted in selfish motives taught by the world or godly motives taught in Scripture.   There is a clear difference between charity and bringing your offerings to the Lord.

ICE BREAKER :    When is the last time you felt "hilarious" about your giving?

 HIS WORD   (3+ principles)

1. IT’S THE HEART/FAITH OF THE GIVER, NOT THE SIZE OF THE GIFT THAT UNLEASHES GOD’S BLESSING.

2. FOR SOME GIVING IS A DISCIPLINE AND FOR OTHERS IT IS A GIFT.  FOR BOTH, IT GROWS WHEN PRACTICED AND DIES WHEN IGNORED.

3. WHEN THE HEART OF THE GIVER IS RIGHT THEN FAITH HOPE AND LOVE GROWS FOR MANY.

YOUR WORLD  (3+ QUESTIONS)

     1. WHAT ARE YOUR MOTIVES FOR GIVING TO FAMILY, FRIENDS IN NEED, THE CHURCH, A POLITICAL PARTY, AN                ORGANIZATION?

2. WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF MINISTRIES WORTHY OF YOUR GENEROSITY?

3. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP GROW YOUR DISCIPLINE/GIFT OF GIVING?

April 17, 2016|  $tewards of Money And Reliable Truth   $.M.A.R.T. Poverty”

Texts:  (4+ Scriptures) Mt. 26:11; James 2:5; 2:1-7; 5:1-6; Acts 20:35; Ezek. 16:49; Mt. 25:31-46; Lev. 19:9-10; 1 Tim. 5:3-6; Gal. 6:9-10; 2Cor. 8:12-15

IN A NUTSHELL:  The most clear test of a man's heart being like God's is to see how he reacts to the poor.  Poverty began as a response to sin in the Garden of Eden, it perpetuated through unproductive habits  and best addressed through discipleship (relationships).

ICE BREAKER :    Have you ever known someone that said, "When we were young we were very poor, but we didn't realize it?"   What does that mean?

HIS WORD   (3+ Questions & 4+ Scriptures)

  1.  What unbiblical assumptions do you have about people who are poor?
  2. How does God view the poor and those who take advantage of them?
  3. What does it mean to treat the poor with dignity?

YOUR WORLD

  1. How would you say God's heart for the poor is seen in your everyday walk/talk & relationships?
  2. How could providing needs for others actually begin to work against their "real needs?"

SMALL PIECES (3 Principles)

  1. You will always have the poor with you.
  2. God has chosen the poor to be rich in faith.
  3. Poverty is born out of an attitude, perpetuated by unproductive habits, and best addressed through discipleship.

BIG PICTURE

Until the day of Judgement God will look to how we have treated the unfortunate and needy to evaluate whether we have His heart or not.  People in enslaved poverty need people that are not enslaved in poverty to exemplify for them  (disciple) what it is to have faith in God and use "stuff" to serve Him.

4/10 $.M.A.R.T. Debt

April 10, 2016  $tewards of Money And Reliable Truth   “$.M.A.R.T. Debt”

Texts:   Proverbs 22:7; James 4:13-16; Psalm 37:21; Romans 13:7-8

IN A NUTSHELL:  Debt is a huge problem in our nation, in our world, and in our individual lives.  Most families sitting in church on Sunday morning have some level of debt, and that does not necessarily place them outside of God’s will.  There are some popular misconceptions about the scriptural teaching on debt that we’ll look at in this sermon. We will examine some of the negative consequences of debt and how it squelches our ability to be generous stewards of God’s resources.

ICE BREAKER:   When did you first take out a loan or credit card? Did that first experience with debt have any effect on your decision-making about debt in later years?

HIS WORD

1.      Is debt encouraged in Scripture?  Why?   (Romans 13:8; Proverbs 22:7; 1 Corinthians 7:23)

2.      What do these verses say about repaying debts?  (Psalm 37:21; Proverbs 3:27-28)

3.      Read 2 Kings 4:1-7.  What principles of getting out of debt can you identify from this passage?

 YOUR WORLD

1.      Here is a list of indicators that you may have a debt problemAre there any of these you have observed in your own life?

·        You avoid asking the tough questions. How are we really going to pay for this?

·        You are living month to month with no budget.

·        Making minimum payments on a variety of loans or credit cards.

·        Moving credit balances around.

·        Dreaming of a quick fix for your debts.

·        Hoping someone else will pay or work off your debts.

·        Unable to give a tithe or respond to God’s call on your life.

2.      If you are in debt, do you have a strategy or plan for debt repayment?

3.      How can we live with contentment in our life?  What’s the “secret” of contentment?  (Colossians 4:10-19)

SMALL PIECES

What is one action you can take this week in relation to wealth, debt, and/or generosity?

BIG PICTURE

Read Luke 6:38; Philippians 4:15; 2 Corinthians 9:6-8.  How is this spiritual economy different from the world’s system of “buying and selling” or “whoever has the most wins”?  What priorities need to shift in order for us to be in alignment with the Lord’s stewardship principles?

THREE KEY PRINCIPLES

·        Christians ought to live in freedom and contentment, but debt enslaves us.

·        Christians ought to live in peace and assurance, but debt causes worry, fear, and insecurity.

·        Christians ought to live generously, but debt ties up our resources.

 THREE QUESTIONS

·        In what ways does debt limit our freedom?

·        What would happen if you suddenly lost your primary source of income?

·        How has debt affected your ability to be generous?

 FOUR SCRIPTURES

·        Proverbs 22:7

·        James 4:13-16

·        Psalm 37:21

·        Romans 13:7-8

NEXT WEEK’S BIBLE READINGS  MAR, 21 - 27,  2 Cor. 7-14

March 20, 2016|  “Gifts"

Texts:  1 Cor. 12:21-26 (1 Cor. 12-14)

IN A NUTSHELL:  Gifts— Spend the next few days thinking about how this fits into your life, your family’s lives, our church’s life? “But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.”

ICE BREAKER :  Recall a time when it was clear that because a Christian friend of your’s suffered you also suffered. And, a Christian friend was honored and therefore you rejoiced.

HIS WORD

1. Read 1 Corinthians 12.  Describe some “body parts” on/in your body that might be regarded as weak but indispensable?   Describe some less honorable body parts that we bestow greater honor upon,  and un-presentable parts that are treated with greater modesty.

2. If the purpose of this is to make sure if one suffers, then everyone in the body suffers and if one is honored everyone rejoices, then how does this work?

3. Does it seem the Christians in Corinth were pursuing the gift of tongues or the gift of prophecy?  How did Paul react to that and what was his reasoning?

4.  How does 1 Cor. 13:1-3 play into this?  Is it possible to use a “spiritual gift” with selfish motives?

 YOUR WORLD

1.  How can one tell if they are using a gift or unique ability or circumstance with wrong motives?  (1 Cor. 13:4-7)

2. How do children use gifts?  How do adults use gifts? What’s the difference?

 SMALL PIECES

1.  What in your life/circumstance might you call a gift from the Holy Spirit, or a unique calling (e.g. singleness, or suffering ?

 BIG PICTURE

1. ”How might God use your gift, whether it be a gift of abilityor weakness to help other Christians find rejoicing or mourning TOGETHER?

What was God saying to them?  What’s God saying to you?

What’s the Holy Spirit going to show throughout the day?

For what are you concerned?

Who needs you today?

Next Week’s Bible Readings  Mar, 14 - 20,  2 Cor. 1-6

Texts:  1 Cor 5:1-26:1-8, 12; 7; 8 1 Cor. 9:19-23;  1 Cor. 10:23,24

IN A NUTSHELL:  Opinions— everyone has one! It’s from where you got it and what you do with it that matters.  Paul says “Even though I am a free man with no master, I have become a slave to all people to bring many to Christ.” Elsewhere he said, “It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning.”  Also, “When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.” Then, “Three things will last forever– faith, hope and love– and the greatest of these is love.

ICE BREAKER   Can you recall a firmly held opinion that you finally had to change.  What/who convinced you?.

 HIS WORD

1. Skim through 1 & 2 Corinthians.  Make a list of all the various topics Paul addresses about which you see differing opinions?  Put a star by those topics that are relevant today.

2. Are there some texts that Paul seems a little “wishy-washy” on his convictions?  1 Cor.  7:6, 12, 25-28; 9::19-22; 10:25-30;

3. What seems to be the core principles upon which Paul bases his opinions, shares his convictions and does his work? 1 Cor. 1:18-22; 2:2-5; 4:14-15; 7:10, 25-26; 9:19; 10:31-33; 14:1;  16:13; 2 Cor. 1:12-14; 4:1-2,18; 5:16; 6:8; 8:20-21

YOUR WORLD

1. Judging by the way you think through and promote your opinions how can you say you want truth more than you want your own way?

2. Do you argue as if you would rather win the debate or win the relationship?

SMALL PIECES

1.  How many relationships have become irreparable because you have given up trying to see from someone else’s perspective?

BIG PICTURE

1. How would your heart and mind need to be changed in order to live like Paul, “For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them”?
